So part one of Kat’s birthday celebration was successful. The morning brought presents, tea and English muffins for Kat, before she headed off for work. Later on, both Amber and myself returned from work as quickly as we could (Amber beat the traffic, the trams were running very intermittently for me) so that we could prepare for the picnic in the Fitzroy Gardens. 3 salads and animal shaped cookies. After we realised that we’d forgotten drinks, we roused Trav and sent him to the shop to purchase a few bottles of something. Kat was late home, so as we finished up, she got changed and we headed off for the park. After several debates about where to sit (and after we’d convinced Trav that the bugs he could see would be all over the park), we threw down the mats and got comfy.
As we finished up, Amber remembered she needed candles for Kat’s cake and ran off to the shop, leaving Trav, Kat and myself throwing peanuts at each other, realising the magpie wasn’t scared of us and debating whether I should get Amber’s car to take out aforementioned magpie. As Amber returned, we shoved everything into the basket again and went off to play on the now child-free playground. I braved the dinosaur slide while Kat took up her favourite position on the swing. All of us tried the baby swing and established without a doubt that it was far too uncomfy to stay on for long!
Eventually we headed home when the flies became too much and took out the ice cream cake! This cake reminded me so much of parties at Hungry Jacks when I was a kid, it was fantastic. Kat went to the toilet and we banished her in there until we lit the candles. A helluva lot of ice cream later and we were all ready to crash. So both Trav and myself lounged and slept while Kat and Amber went to see the lemon-pez-like Ben Birchall and the Corrections, ending a warm, sunny birthday.
The rest of the merriment continues on Saturday, but most of this is a surprise to me too as Amber has been plotting and planning in secret. So I guess we shall wait and see what the day brings.
